Quoth Privacy Policy

This privacy policy explains how Quoth (the "app"), developed by Dmitry Zhigulin ("we", "us"), processes your information. By default, the app transcribes and translates speech on your device, and your recordings and text stay on your Mac unless you choose an online provider.

Information We Collect

We do not collect your recordings, transcriptions, translations or any other content you create with the app. The app has no user accounts and contains no advertising, analytics or tracking.

The app checks for updates automatically, about once a day, unless you turn this off in the app's settings, and when you choose to check. With each check, our update server, run by a hosting provider, receives the app's version and your IP address. This information is used only to deliver updates. Copies of the app installed from the Mac App Store are updated by the App Store and do not contact our server.

If you contact us by email, we receive your email address and message and use them only to respond to you.

We process this information based on our legitimate interests in keeping the app up to date and secure (update checks) and in responding to your messages (email).

Third-Party Services

• Online providers. The app can use an online provider, such as Groq, OpenAI, Google or Anthropic, with an API key from your own account with that provider, to transcribe your speech or to translate the transcribed text. This happens only if you agree to send data to that provider and choose it for transcription or translation. Recordings (for transcription) or transcribed text (for translation) are then sent directly from your device to the provider. With recordings for transcription, the app may also send the spellings you entered in the app's dictionary, where the provider accepts them. With text for translation, the app may also send, as context, transcribed text previously dictated into the same application on your Mac and sent to the same provider for translation in the preceding minutes, and the translations you entered in the app's dictionary for words that appear in that text. We do not receive any of this data. The provider's own terms and privacy policy apply, including whether the provider uses the data to improve its products, which for some providers depends on your plan with them.

Our hosting provider and these providers may process data in the United States and other countries.

Data Storage and Retention

The app does not store your recordings, transcriptions or translations. Transcribed text used as context for online translation is kept in memory only, for a limited time, and is deleted when the app quits. Your settings, including the app's dictionary, and downloaded models are stored on your Mac, and API keys in your macOS Keychain, until you delete them. Update server logs are kept by our hosting provider for a limited time. Emails are kept only as long as needed to respond.

Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, but no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct or delete your personal data, to restrict or object to its processing, to data portability, and to withdraw your consent at any time. You can withdraw consent to online providers and turn off automatic update checks in the app's settings. To exercise your other rights, contact us. For data sent to an online provider, contact that provider. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Children's Privacy

The app is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
